Upload a 3D model

Objective: Upload a 3D CAD file to Cognite Data Platform.

Steps

  1. Find a 3D CAD file. If you don't have one, you can use this as an example. We currently only support filetypes .fbx and .obj.

  2. Open our 3D upload service 3d-ingestor.cogniteapp.com. It should look something like this:

  1. Add your desired tenant to the list, by filling in its name in the text field (1) and click Save this tenant (2).

  2. The tenant now appears in a list of tenants, and you can click the Go button (3).

  3. You might need to log in to your account.

  4. You will now see a list of all 3D models that are added to the tenant. To add a new 3D model, click Add New Model (4).

  5. Give the 3D model a name (5), then click Create New Model (6).

  6. To upload the 3D CAD file, click inside the area defined by the blue rectangle (7).

  7. Select the 3D CAD file (8), and click Open (9). This view is macOS specific, but Windows and Linux have similar views.

  8. Click Upload (10) to start uploading the file. The upload speed depends on your internet connection, and uploading may take a long time if the file is big.

  9. After the file is uploaded, Cognite Data Platform starts optimizing the 3D model for rendering. Depending on the size of the model, this may take anything from a couple of minutes to a few hours. You will see the list of all 3D models on your tenant, and if you click on the one you just uploaded (11), you can observe the optimization status (12) and refresh the page (13) whenever you want to.

  10. Once the model is finished processing, the status will change to Done. Click anywhere inside the light blue box to open the revision.

  11. Here you can publish/unpublish this revision (15) which means it will be visible in Operational Intelligence and any other 3D application based on the Cognite 3D Viewer. Click the play button (16) to open the 3D model.

  12. You are now visualizing your 3D model inside our viewer. Use the screenshot button (17) to create a thumbnail and set default camera position.
